Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson are desperate to keep the House majority in Republican hands, because in Johnson’s own words, a Democratic midterm victory would end Trump’s presidency.
Johnson and the president have turned to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) who has put gerrymandering the state’s congressional districts on the agenda for the state legislature.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) ripped Abbott in a statement:
Hundreds of people have died or are missing as a result of the deadly flooding in the Texas Hill country. There are real questions about Governor Greg Abbott’s failed leadership, lack of preparation and the reckless decision not to bolster the early warning infrastructure in flood prone communities.
Instead of aggressively addressing the failures of his administration, Governor Abbott and shameless extremists are conspiring with Donald Trump and House Republicans to try to rig the election and disenfranchise millions of voters.
Republicans are running scared after enacting the largest cut to Medicaid and food assistance in American history in order to give massive tax breaks to their billionaire donors. The Trump presidency is a failure, the One Big Ugly Bill is deeply unpopular and House Republicans are nothing more than a rubber stamp for their Puppet Master’s extreme agenda.
House Democrats will push back hard against this gerrymandering scheme. We are confident that if it goes through, it will result in making several incumbent House Republicans vulnerable to fierce general election challenges. At the end of the day, there will likely be several additional swing seat pick-up opportunities in the great state of Texas. House Democrats will unleash everything we have to defeat vulnerable Republican incumbents and flip those seats. Republicans are cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Jeffries was correct about a key point. Texas Republicans have been fighting to hang on in a state that is getting more competitive by passing restrictive voting laws for years.
Texas Republicans can’t gerrymander the state the way that Trump and Johnson would like without also creating several districts where incumbent House Republicans would face tough reelection challenges.
Democrats are already excited about the Senate race in Texas, especially if Ken Paxton becomes the Republican nominee.
The combination of changing demographics, an open Senate race led by a scandal-riddled and unpopular Republican, along with the unpopularity of Trump and his agenda, could form the perfect storm for whatever Trump, Johnson, and Abbott’s scheme to backfire.
It is a sign of extreme desperation that Republicans are turning to Texas, but if the blue wave comes, there won’t be enough gerrymandered seats in the Lone Star State to prevent it from turning Trump into the lamest of lame ducks.

I will believe Abbott can be ousted by his own voters when I see the picketing and protesting this monster deserves. For too long now he has been getting re-elected not because he's a great leader but because they are too ashamed to vote against a man in a wheel chair. This man in a wheel chair does not deserve his sympathy. He deserves their strongest ire.
Abbot needs to concentrate on the governance of Texas, with that $80 billion rainy day fund, he failed to
use to protect the Hill Country in Central Texas with early warning sirens. The governor is so willing to control Washington through manipulation and servitude to his King and hand over Texas on a silver platter‼️
