Hakeem Jeffries Spells It Out For Mike Johnson And Trump
As the American political world settles in for its holiday slumber, Democrats are increasingly making their position clear on the incoming administration and congressional Republican majorities.
The consultant class chatter that Democrats need to change their approach to Trump and congressional Republicans, which was prevalent after the election faded, and what has taken place is a different and more common sense strategy.
Political math is reality, and the math has a clear message.
There is very little that Republicans can do for the next two years without Democratic help. House Republicans will have a one-vote majority for the first four months of the new Congress, representing one-eighth of the next congressional term.
The term is even shorter because, by January 2026, Congress will be focused on the midterm election, making it even more challenging to pass significant legislation.
Time and the numbers are on the side of Democrats.
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries made it clear that Democrats will press their advantages.
Jen Psaki asked Jeffries on Sunday if Democrats would save Mike Johnson from being ousted as Speaker of the House, and he answered:
There will be no Democrats available to save him, or the extreme MAGA Republicans from themselves based on the breaching of a bipartisan agreement that reflected priorities that were good for the American people. We're gonna have to continue to work on several of those as we move forward, including plusing up resources for community health centers, which is a bipartisan priority that Republicans walked away from.
Even though it benefits people in urban America, rural America, small-town America, the heartland of America, as well as Appalachia. We'll have the ability to wage those battles over the next few weeks in the next few months, given that this is only a short-term continuing resolution that will expire on March 14th.
