Even as DOGE runs around stealing Americans’ data under the thinly disguised guise of getting rid of “fraud, waste and abuse,” the spending under President Donald Trump has already exceeded that of former President Joe Biden by $154 billion more than in the same period in 2024, and yet self-titled “fiscally conservative” Republicans are pushing permanent tax cuts for their elite cronies.
Federal spending is a lot higher since Trump took office, even as DOGE recklessly fires federal employees, tries to shut down entire agencies, and slashes jobs. In fact, government spending since the inauguration is $154 billion more than in the same period in 2024 during the administration of President Joe Biden, according to an analysis of Treasury Department data by the Wall Street Journal.
The notoriously conservative WSJ also noted that DOGE’s efforts, such as they are claimed, “have yet to affect the bottom line.”
Musk’s claims about amounts of money supposedly saved have repeatedly been found to have been misleading, exaggerated, and/or false.
The Journal also says that taxes and revenue (including tariffs – yes, that money is going to pay for the tax cuts and Americans will pay for it in price hikes, aka a tax) is NOT ENOUGH to keep pace with the higher spending.
“And while the government’s income—taxes and revenues including tariffs—is also up, it isn’t enough to keep pace with higher spending.”
Musk’s misleading claims about DOGE were debunked by CNN’s Daniel Dale in February (imagine how long this fact check would be now), who had to note that this list of 8 examples of Musk misleading the public does not include “include erroneous cost-savings claims on the website of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency” and also “it doesn’t include the many vague Musk assertions that he hasn’t corroborated but that also can’t be definitively debunked at this time.”
You know, like the claims Republicans repeat at town halls when they’re met with angry constituents who don’t want their money from Social Security to pay for Trump’s gift to his elite donors.
