Gavin Newsom: 'I'm gonna punch these sons of b*tches in the mouth'
Gavin Newsom urgently tried to awaken Americans to Trump and Republicans' radical rigging of a midterm election, saying they are vandalizing this democracy and we have to act before it's too late.

Gavin Newsom said on The Siren podcast that Republicans are in the middle of a radical rigging of an election, vandalizing democracy and the rule of law and so he is fighting fire with fire and he’s gonna “punch these sons of bitches in the mouth.”
“It is radical rigging of a midterm election, radical rigging of an election, destroying vandalizing this democracy, the rule of law. So I'm sorry. I know some people's sensibilities. I respect and appreciate that. But right now, with all due respect, we're walking down a damn different path. We're fighting fire with fire. I'm gonna punch these sons of bitches in the mouth.”

You can bet that quote is going to be repeated ad nauseam by the pearl-clutching concern trolls on TV, so let’s get into it.
First of all, unlike Donald Trump and many Republicans, Newsom has not actually encouraged physical violence against reporters, journalists, protesters, and more. But just the other day, Trump sent armed troops to Newsom’s press conference about his plan to temporarily redistrict California in response to Texas Republicans doing a radical redistricting to find Trump five seats.
The violence in this country has been predominantly aimed right at Democrats from Republicans and conservatives. It has been incited by Trump. Newsom is the Governor of a state where the then Speaker of the House’s husband was brutally attacked in their home by a man incited by conservative Trump rhetoric about Nancy Pelosi. He is watching people in his state being beaten and dragged from their homes and churches.
If anyone has a lecture about appropriate language, they had best have started it ten years ago and have a long track record of calling out Republicans and Trump when they demonized Democratic voters, Black people, and everyone else they see as their enemy. For years, Democratic voters have been abused and terrorized at the ballot box by these criminal thugs, and no one has had a word to say about it. That’s just “Trump’s personality.”
They frothed at the mouth about “a basket of deplorables” but they’re fine with half the country being insulted and dehumanized to the point that many who live in Trump areas are afraid to put a sign up, afraid to “admit” who they voted for.
Enough. To anyone clutching their pearls, I would ask, “How many people need to be kidnapped and disappeared before you’re comfortable with an idiom?”
The idiom “punch ‘em in the mouth” is figurative and means confronting challenging situations head-on and pushing through adversity. "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth” means one must adapt and persevere when faced with unexpected challenges.
For context, before Newsom said the part about punching people in the mouth he said, “This is it. There's no do over. We don't get this back. This guy's not screwing around. He's not I mean, this is a guy who literally celebrated the fact that, well, Putin himself said, ‘Sir, you know, mail in ballots are invalid’. This is a guy who's rigged all his elections, but giving advice to Trump. Trump took it. I mean, did this? Hey, can I say this to Republicans out there? I pray you pay attention to what's going on. This is not about he doesn't care about the Republican Party. He took it over. He's an invasive species he doesn't even reflect itself.”
Donald Trump is taking Putin’s advice about how to rig elections and people are worried that Gavin Newsom is being unseemly. I am willing to bet those same people are not Black or Brown people being dragged off of the streets by Trump’s masked (hooded) thugs.
Newsom sent the message that California is engaging in direct democracy and are doing their redistricting in response to what Texas Republicans are doing at Donald Trump’s request:
“On November 4, our mindset here in California is one of accountability, responsibility. We have agency. We're not bystanders. We can shape the future by asking the voters, in a transparent and temporary way, to make a determination for themselves, to change our maps mid decade, in response to what occurred in Texas.”
The California Governor added that if Republicans want an off ramp, they can get it by not proceeding with their efforts to ‘find Trump 5 seats’ in Texas and other red states where they are scrambling to redistrict to keep a very unpopular president and party in power.
“If they don't move, if Republicans stand back, they have an off ramp this initiative, our efforts, don't go forward. We're doing this only in response to what he's doing. So if he doesn't want us to move forward, he has some capacity to influence that, not just in his own state, but by making the case to other governors in other states that this is not the right thing to do, that we should all stand back support nationalized independent redistricting. And we should let voters choose their representatives, not the other way around.”
Newsom addressed the raging hypocrisy of the Republicans complaining about Newsom answering their rigging of the midterms with temporary redistricting that will be in the hands of the people, not maps made in back rooms as in Texas.
Governor Newsom said he hopes other blue states governors move their feet.
“I’m sick of being weak. I'm sick of being effete. I'm sick of being non consequential,” the California Democrat said. “I hope, I pray that other governors, as they're in church, as they pray, they move their feet. It's faith and works. Let's go.”
“California is not the only game in town, there's dozens and dozens of blue states out there. There's opportunity here. “
Newsom pointed out that the plan isn’t easy, in fact he needs to raise $100+ million dollars to do the redistricting and needs people to support his effort, to make phone calls and donate and put boots on the ground:
“Look, this wasn't you think it was easy for what we did. I couldn't do this just through my legislature, even though we have two thirds of the legislature both houses. We we need to go back in front of the voters. I need to raise 100 plus million dollars. I need to people watching to support this effort, not just with $3 that would be amazing, $20, whatever you can afford, but boots on the ground, I need you to make phone calls and text messages.”
“They're coming. He's trying to rig not only the 2026 election. What more evidence did you need yesterday. He's trying to rig this one by literally shutting down mail in voting, this is happening. Everyone wake. up, wake up.”
Newsom said We The People are the only thing that can stop Trump. “There is no do-over.”
You wanted a new Democratic Party, and you are getting it.
