Ex-Government Officials Propose Insurrection Act Reform
Even though Trump doesn’t try to hide his lust for converting the presidency into an authoritarian regime, much of the corporate media continues to normalize Donald Trump as a regular presidential candidate on par with President Joe Biden.
It is not speculation what Trump intends to do with presidential power if he is returned to office.
The Washington Post reported in November 2023, “Donald Trump and his allies have begun mapping out specific plans for using the federal government to punish critics and opponents should he win a second term, with the former president naming individuals he wants to investigate or prosecute and his associates drafting plans to potentially invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrations.”
Trump is on record as saying that he regrets not deploying the military against protesters after the death of George Floyd, and the ex-president has promised that will deploy the military against US citizens if he wins the 2024 election.
Trump’s plans and promises caught the attention of some of the same former government officials who spearheaded the Electoral Count Act reform in 2022. They have released a proposal to restrict the Insurrection Act to prevent Trump or any other future president from using executive power to deploy troops against US citizens without meeting strict standards.
The Insurrection Act was enacted in 1792 and has not been reformed since 1871. It is vague and ripe for abuse by a president with bad intentions.
The irony should not be lost on anyone that Donald Trump wants to use a law that was enacted when Revolutionary War hero and first president George Washington was in office to destroy the very freedoms that Washington and others fought to establish.
Up next, we’ll look at what the proposed changes to the Insurrection Act would do and how they would stop Trump.
