What We Are Seeing In The Republican Party Has Never Happened Before

Presidents dominate political parties while they are in office. The presidency is so powerful that not only does a president shape the culture and attitude of the nation, but they oversee their political party.

This is not new or unique.

Since the modern presidency evolved under FDR and The New Deal, presidents have become those who shape and influence their party.

Never in US political history has one person maintained control over a political party the way that Donald Trump has since leaving office.

Trump’s control was cemented when after leaving office in disgrace, he was able to threaten RNC Chair Ronna Romney-McDaniel into keeping in power by dangling the idea that he would launch a third party.

McDaniel was terrified by the thought because she correctly calculated that a Trump departure would kill the Republican Party and that Republicans had a better chance of winning with Trump than without him.

So Trump kept control of the Republican Party. It didn’t matter when Trump was criminally indicted nearly 100 times. It doesn’t matter what scandal pops up. Trump is unquestionably in charge. Trump successfully killed the bipartisan border bill just by wanting it done.

Political parties are measured by their performance in elections. They exist to win elections. If a party isn’t winning elections, it is failing.

By every single measurement, since Trump won in 2016, the Republican Party has failed. Republicans have lost or underperformed in every single election for six years running.

Yet, the media continues to sell the Republican Party as viable.

There has never been a party that has failed this much and seen no sweeping change, but as we will discuss below, change isn’t coming because the Republican Party as a functional entity has been killed by Trump.
