McCarthy had House Republicans block an expulsion vote on Rep. Santos and instead referred him to the Ethics Committee in a vote that will be used by Democrats in 2024.

Kevin McCarthy Smears House Republicans With Santos Stink
In what may go down as one of the most politically short-sighted decisions in recent history, the House voted 221-204-7 to refer Rep. George Santos (R-NY) to the Ethics Committee. Every single Republican in the House voted to block an expulsion vote by sending the expulsion motion to the Ethics Committee. The seven present votes came from the seven Democrats who serve on the Ethics Committee because they will be investigating Santos and presumably wish to maintain objectivity.
Democrats set this up.
