Democrats Won't Vote To Raise The Debt Limit For Trump's Tax Cuts For The Rich
House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-CA) said Democrats won't vote for any disaster relief that raises that debt limit so Trump can cut taxes for the rich.
On Meet The Press, Kristen Welker asked if Democrats would support a disaster relief package for California that also raised the debt limit.
Leader Jeffries answered:
The California delegation in the House has been very clear that they do not support conditioning disaster assistance to the American people whose lives have been overturned as a result of the historic wildfires in California.
In the history of this country, we have never conditioned disaster assistance to Americans who are hurting. Why would we do it right now?
Here's the answer in terms of why House Republicans are proposing to do just that. House Republicans want to pass massive tax breaks for billionaires and wealthy corporations to benefit the wealthy, the well off, and the well-connected and to stick the bill with working-class Americans and those in the middle class who they claim to want to support.
That is not an effort. That is not a scheme that Democrats will support.
Watch the Jeffries interview:
Trump and Mike Johnson are trying to ransom Democrats into increasing the debt limit because they know that the votes don’t exist on the Republican side for the GOP to raise the debt limit on their own.
Republicans can’t hold disaster relief hostage to get their tax cuts for billionaires and corporations.
There has never been conditional disaster relief. California is one of the top states in sending tax revenue to the federal government, so it is fair that in a time of need, the revenue returns to the communities and people who are hurting. The money should not go into the pockets of billionaires like Elon Musk and Donald Trump.
The critical takeaway from Rep. Jeffries's comments is that Democrats in the House are taking a firm stand. They aren’t going to be bailing Trump out so that he can get his agenda through Congress.
Jeffries was far from done with taking Republicans to task.
