Democrats Tell Kristi Noem That Slapping Body Cameras On ICE In Minneapolis Changes Nothing

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced that ICE will be wearing body cameras in Minneapolis, but Democrats were not budging or impressed.

Kristi Noem must really want the funding for the Department of Homeland Security. While Congress did give DHS a pile of money in the budget reconciliation bill last year, that money is staggered out over several years, and earmarked for specific programs and tasks.

All told DHS got 180% increase in funding this year from Republicans in Congress, which is a lot, but Noem’s DHS is burning through funds at a rapid rate. Each of Trump’s immigration actions costs millions of dollars.

None of this is cheap and the bills keep coming in, which is apparently why Noem took the step that she took on Monday, as DHS announced on X:

I just spoke with RealTomHoman ICEDirector CBPCommissioner. Effective immediately we are deploying body cameras to every officer in the field in Minneapolis. As funding is available, the body camera program will be expanded nationwide. We will rapidly acquire and deploy body cameras to DHS law enforcement across the country. The most transparent administration in American history—thank you POTUS Trump.

The key words are as funding becomes available.

The problem is that DHS already has a pile of money, so trying to cry poverty as a reason why they can’t proactively implement reforms should and does ring hollow.
