Are Democrats Trying To Take The Easy Way Out?
Democrats will begin the next Congress and presidency in a position they have had little experience with over the previous 16 years. They will control no part of the federal government, even with what looks like a one-seat majority, House Republicans until they sabotage themselves with infighting and will be able to get things done. Senate Democrats have much more leverage, thanks to Republicans keeping the filibuster around.
The issue of Trump’s crimes is a sore spot for much of the Democratic base, and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) made some comments on CNN recently that could raise eyebrows.
Transcript:
RASKIN: So that is established. And so there has been some historical accountability. There was -- there's been some congressional accountability. Of course, the Senate voted 57 to 43, in the most sweeping bipartisan vote in American history, to convict an impeached president.
He did beat the constitutional spread of two-thirds.
HUNT: Right.
RASKIN: We needed 67 votes.
But I wouldn't say there hasn't been any accountability.
HUNT: But criminally speaking?
RASKIN: Well, criminally speaking, yes.
Rep. Raskin made the point that it was never his position that Trump could be criminally charged instead of impeached and convicted, which was the Senate Republican position, but Raskin’s comments also sound like Democrats have moved on from Trump's criminal charges and lead to the question of whether House Democrats are planning to sit back and wait for the midterm elections where they are likely to take the majority instead of being aggressive and pushing back against Trump and Republicans.
Democrats Must Pounce On Every Destructive Trump Policy And Failure
It would be a massive mistake for House Democrats to even consider sitting back and waiting for the majority to fall into their hands. The next administration's policies are shaping up to be exactly what the vast majority of Americans don’t want.
