Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said that Democrats didn't do enough with their power when they had it, and in order to lead the country again, the party must be bold.

In some ways it is easy to be the opposition party. The party gets to criticize and say no to everything without having to try to govern or pass any legislation. The problem arises when the country is in a crisis and looking to the opposition party to lead when as is the current case in the United States the governing party is acting in an unpopular and unwanted manner.
Democratic elites continue to try to make excuses for why they failed in 2024, and they continue to overthink and overanalyze while talking to each other about a problem that they had a large hand in creating.
Rep. Eric Swalwell recently voiced an idea during an appearance on MSNBC about what the Democratic Party needs to do, and it’s not complicated at all.
Video of Swalwell:
Swalwell said when asked about the American people not viewing Democrats as leaders:
Boldness. People look at Democrats and they see that we had power, we had the White House, the Senate, and the House, but if you were a mom in America, you didn't think your kids were any safer at school from a mass shooting because we didn't pass background checks or an assault weapons ban, and we let the filibuster get in the way.
So we were perceived as being weak when we had power. So with boldness, I think we can tell Americans if you're gonna bet on yourself. If you're gonna risk everything and work hard, you're gonna have a government that'll bet on you when it comes to your healthcare. We're not just gonna protect it and stop them from taking 14 million people off healthcare.
We're gonna double down on cures and investments to make sure that cures are within reach for everyone. So I see an opportunity for boldness, and I'm seeing a lot of new leaders emerge. Times like these frankly reveal to me not just who should lead. But who should leave? You're seeing Jasmine Crockett, Maxwell Frost, Robert Garcia, new leaders stepping up, going to town halls and Republican districts, and revealing themselves to be able to meet the moment and to bring that boldness.
It is not just about boldness. It is also about the message itself, which is what we will discuss next.
