A bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security was supposed to be voted on this week, but House Republicans had to pull it off the schedule after Democrats refused to support it.

The Department of Homeland Security was expected to see its yearly appropriations bill pass the House until an ICE agent murdered a mother of three in Minneapolis.

Now that the bill has been yanked off the schedule because enough Democrats in the House came out against it, and made passage impossible.

Sarah Ferris of CNN posted on X:

As we first reported last week, DHS funding bill ran into huge problems with Dems after ICE shooting (w/mkraju) Rs have now officially pulled DHS from this week’s funding package. Dozens of Dems balked from supporting minibus after shooting

ICE did get a big pile of money from the Republicans’ tax cuts for the rich bill, but that money is staggered out over the next four years. ICE may not get its yearly appropriation anytime soon.

Senators like Chris Murphy (D-CT) are calling on Democrats not support any funding for ICE until it is reined in.

Murphy said:

Republicans need Democratic votes in order to pass a budget for the Department of Homeland Security. And what we’re talking about – I wouldn’t initially categorize as sweeping, right? We’re simply talking about, you know, essentially going back to the way that ICE was operating when they cared about legality, right? Identification of officers, that’s something that has been standard practice in every law enforcement agency all across the country. CBP, who are supposed to be at the border, protecting us at the border, operating in the interior with no training on how to deal with complex urban environments, that’s brand new.

So we just need to get back to a Department of Homeland Security that is prioritizing the law and prioritizing keeping people safe. And yes, I think it is reasonable for Democrats speaking on behalf of the majority of the American public who don’t approve of what ICE is doing to say, “If you want to fund the Department of Homeland Security, I want to fund a Department of Homeland Security that is operating in a safe and legal manner.”
