Democrats Flip District Trump Won By 19 In Iowa Special Election On Cost Of Living
A district that Trump won by 19 points in November flipped to a 4 point Democratic victory in an Iowa state Senate special election.

Trump Has Only Been In Office For A Week And This Happened
Special elections are like snowflakes. They are unique, so a person should not draw national conclusions from a local special election. These elections usually turn on local issues, and they aren’t reflective of how voters feel about a political party at a national level.
Elections can measure how engaged the supporters of a party are after a win, and if that is the case, the special election result in Iowa might be a warning sign for Republicans.
There was something else at play in Iowa's 35th Senate district.
Look at what Democrat Mike Zimmer ran and won on, according to WQAD 8:
“I am honored that the residents of Senate District 35 have put their faith in me to represent them in the Iowa Senate. Our campaign’s values of hard work and fairness resonated with a bipartisan coalition of voters in Clinton, Jackson, and Scott counties. I‘m looking forward to working on behalf of the people of Eastern Iowa to help working Iowans get ahead, support our public schools and teachers, and help lower the cost of living," Zimmer said in a press release.
During a Jan. 16 public forum, Zimmer said he's focused on improving education funding and raising the minimum wage.
"I know we're in the super minority, but I also know there are many many legislative pieces in which we can agree upon," Zimmer said
Zimmer ran on helping people get ahead by lowering the cost of living and raising the minimum wage.
If there is a red flag for Republicans, the issues that Mike Zimmer ran and won on would be it.
