Democrats Stay True To Their Word And Let Trump/Musk Dysfunction Sink Republicans
For the last decade-plus, Republicans could always count on Democrats to save them from themselves. Whether it was matters of funding the government or a default on the national debt, Democrats have consistently come to the rescue and pulled the country back from the brink of numerous Republican disasters.
Speaker Mike Johnson negotiated in good faith with Democrats in the House and Senate, which say what you will about Johnson, but the one thing that Democrats in Congress agree on is that, unlike Kevin McCarthy, Johnson negotiated in good faith. All sides had a deal on a continuing resolution that would fund the government until March 2025.
Trump didn’t say a peep and seemed content to let the bill pass.
Then Elon Musk started throwing a tantrum. At first, House Republicans laughed at Musk and planned to pass their bill, then Musk started getting a lot of media attention for his outburst, and that is when Trump got involved and demanded that the debt ceiling be lifted or the government would be shut down for the next month plus at minimum.
Knowing Donald Trump, he only got involved because Elon Musk was stealing his spotlight, but once Trump spoke, House Republicans went into their normal state of dysfunction and panic. Johnson is trying to salvage his bill by attaching a two-year debt limit increase to it and making some minor cuts.
There is just one really big problem.
Democrats are telling Republicans that they are on their own.
