Democrats are putting up a fight and not standing aside to let Donald Trump gerrymander the Texas congressional maps.
It looks like Democrats are about to win round one of this fight.
Brad Johnson of The Daily Texan posted on X:
The speaker says that the House will convene again on Friday, saying if there is no quorum then, the chambers will sine die and the gov will call an immediate second special session.
Greg Abbott has promised to call special session after special session to wear the Democrats down, but DNC Chair Ken Martin said that Democrats are not backing down:
After enduring bomb threats and attempts at arrest and expulsion, Texas Democrats have held firm and blocked Trump’s efforts to rig the Texas maps this session.
Governor Abbott could have brought flood relief to victims in Kerr County. Instead, he chose to follow Trump’s orders to protect Republicans from accountability after they voted to take away health care and food from millions of Americans. It’s time for Abbott to stop playing political games, call a special session focused on flood relief, and abandon this craven power grab. He can finally work on behalf of Texas voters instead of trying to disenfranchise them. And he can reaffirm the basic premise that Texans choose their elected officials — not Donald Trump.
Democrats are not backing down.
The DNC has been very active in supporting the Texas Democrats. They have sent over 250,000 texts to voters in Austin, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth. 30,000 volunteers have been mobilized and sent to Texas to fight the gerrymander, and they have also been mobilizing organizations to help the Texas Democrats.
As we have seen, any direct political donations from organizations to the Texas Democrats have been met with lawsuits from state AG Ken Paxton, so Democrats have been marshalling their supporters to give directly to the Texas House Democrats.
Governors in California, New York, Illinois, and other states have lent their support and protection.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has been very supportive, as the Texas House Democrats have become a party-wide effort, and so far, they are winning.
The lesson here is that taking a stand matters. Being willing to say no is critical at this time. Democrats face an uphill battle to stop the gerrymander still, but Republicans are frustrated and have few tools to get the Democrats back to the state.
Instead of lying down, people are fighting back, which is how democracy will be saved.

I have great hopes that it will inspire other places to do the same!
