Three U.S. senators are trying to do something about the scourge of Trump putting his name on federal buildings. This legislation was inspired by Trump slapping his name on the living monument to former President John F. Kennedy.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen said at a protest outside of the Kennedy Center in December 2025:

Mark my words, whether it’s a matter of weeks or months, Donald Trump’s name will come down off of the Kennedy Center.

I know that because the American people won’t stand for it and because it was a blatantly illegal act that was taken by the board.

This board that was handpicked by Donald Trump conspired to violate the law and they need to be held accountable too, because the law is very clear that this memorial was named after John F.Kennedy.

Van Hollen has followed through.

The legislation titled the Serve Act states:

No Federal building, land, or other asset 6 may be named, renamed, designated, or redesignated in the name of a sitting President; and

(2) no Federal funds may be used to name, rename, designate, or redesignate any Federal building, land, or other asset in the name of a sitting President.

(b) APPLICABILITY.—Any Federal building, land, or other asset named after the sitting President as of the date of enactment of this Act shall be returned to the name given to that Federal building, land, or other asset by Federal law.
