Donald Trump’s style of politics has always been about punching down and bullying. When Trump began his second administration, he embarked on a wildly illegal tariff strategy that was based on the completely wrong notion that he could bully US allies into “better” trade deals with threats of tariffs that are paid for by the American people.

Trump’s tariff bullying was a total failure. Other nations retaliated. The tariffs drove up prices for the American people, and the economy has been pushed to the brink.

On Thursday evening, the Trump administration posted an odd message to the president’s Truth Social account that read like damage control.

It seems like the president had been humiliated in China, but the meetings were conducted in private, and details were sparse as to what could have happened.

What is known is that Trump went to China with a plane load of CEOs and came back with a whole lot of nothing.

Trump wanted help with Iran and with opening the Strait of Hormuz, which did not happen.

The Trump charm offense in Beijing appears to have fallen on deaf ears, and what is even worse is that autocrats everywhere around the world now understand that Trump’s threats are empty, and the way to instantly get the better of him is to threaten the president.

It turns out that the Chinese left their meetings with Trump unimpressed.
