8 Republicans Got On Stage And None Of Them Will Be President
If you would like a wrap-up of who did what at the Republican debate, you can find it here.
The Republicans held their first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle and it was striking to see how little the party had changed. A new group of faces, and Chris Christie, were standing on the debate stage, but the views were exactly the same as they were in 2016 and 2020. The Republican Party isn’t evolving. It is trapped in its own quicksand.
Without Trump to act as the sun for all of the planets to orbit around, the debate revealed that the Republican Party has a Trump problem, but it also has much deeper issues. The current GOP is out of step with where the majority of the country is on most issues. Trump wasn’t there, but views sounded just as extreme without him, which tells me that replacing the party standard bearer in presidential elections won’t cure the illness in the former party of Lincoln.
Where Democrats have a deep bench of talented prospects for the future, each generation of Republican presidential candidates seems to be getting worse. The people who want to beat Trump are getting less charismatic and talented each time around.
None of the candidates on the debate stage will be president or vice president after election night in 2024.
