President Biden’s Investing in America agenda will be on display Friday as the President and Vice President will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to announce $7 billion in funding to launch seven clean hydrogen hubs around the country, which will create jobs and address their climate goals at the same time.
These “clean hydrogen hubs” will be the third installment in the Investing in America tour and are meant to drive private sector investment in clean hydrogen. This could be a huge energy shift taking place every slow gently.
More jobs and more American made manufacturing
These hubs are meant to provide high-quality, good-paying jobs that support worker organizing and collective bargaining. Unions have sent letters of support for all seven of the clean hydrogen hubs.
Three of the seven hubs, the Pacific Northwest hub, the Mid-Atlantic hub, and the California hub, were developed in “deep commitment” with unions and already have project labor agreements and representation on the decision-making boards, a senior administration official said.
The hubs are called “Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs” (H2Hubs) and they will create tens of thousands of jobs. “Each hub submitted a community benefits plan describing the steps applicants will take to engage with community and labor groups, invest in America's workforce, and support the Justice40 Initiative,” a senior administration official told us on a press call.
President Biden signed an executive order within days of taking office that enacted the Justice40 Initiative, which “made it a goal that 40 percent of the overall benefits of certain Federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized, underserved, and overburdened by pollution.”
The key part of the negotiations before the private entitles are put under award in phase one of this project will be scoping out the details of their community benefits plan, a key component of that is how they are going to provide high-quality jobs, senior administration officials told us.
Just seven days ago, the new jobs numbers came in for September and they were incredible. Biden has now created 13.9 million new jobs since taking office. It’s not wrong to call him the FDR of our time — Imagine if he had another term of this kind of transformation.
Biden really is doing incredible work on infrastructure, manufacturing and jobs — of which increase our security and strengthen our democracy, which we so desperately need.
Climate Impact
Hydrogen is the “Swiss Army knife of clean energy” for energy security, jobs and climate impact, a senior administration official told us during a press call. Hydrogen is low cost and can be produced with zero or near-zero carbon emissions.
These hubs are meant to help position America to be a global leader in emerging clean energy industries.
However, unless the hydrogen is made with renewable energy, some degree of fossil fuels are used in production.
