President Biden’s announcement that Brittney Griner had been freed from a Russian prison via a prisoner swap was a moment that reflected the power of Biden’s dogged and competent diplomacy. At the same time, the President made sure to show consideration for Griner and a commitment to free every American, including Paul Whelan, who is being unlawfully detained.

It is important for the President to express his empathy for the Whelan family because for every family like the Griners that will be celebrating the return of their loved one this Christmas, there are others like the Whelans who will be spending another holiday season worried about the health and safety of an unjustly detained family member somewhere in the world.

The fact that President Biden chose to point this out instead of taking a shallow victory lap is an example of why the character of the person occupying the Oval Office matters.
