Bernie Sanders Defends The Disabled And Blasts Trump's Plan To Cut Social Security Disability
Donald Trump is considering the largest cut to Social Security Disability in history, so Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is fighting back.
Donald Trump made many promises while he was running for president in 2024. One of them was his promise not to cut Medicare. However, his tax cuts for the rich have blown a massive hole in the deficit that will trigger an automatic Medicare cut if Congress doesn’t do anything about it.
While campaigning in 2024, Trump vowed, “I will never do anything that will jeopardize or hurt Social Security or Medicare. We’ll have to do it elsewhere. But we’re not going to do anything to hurt them.”

Just like all of Trump’s other promises, his pledge not to hurt Social Security turned out to be a lie.
The Trump administration is now considering a massive cut to the Social Security disability program by no longer making age a qualifying disability for benefits. The Trump administration is also considering raising the age eligibility for disability from age 50 to age 60.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions and Family Policy, wrote to Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Frank Bisignano and outlined his opposition to the plan.
Sanders wrote in part:
The proposal that President Trump is reportedly considering would either remove age as a factor in eligibility for Social Security disability benefits or increase it from age 50 to 60. If finalized, it has been estimated that this would be the largest cut to Social Security disability benefits in the modern history of our country. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions and Family Policy, I am writing to urge you not to move forward with this absurd proposal.
…
This proposal would make a bad situation horrifically worse. If implemented, it would be a death sentence for older Americans with disabilities who desperately need these Social Security benefits. That would be unacceptable.
