As the cold hand of winter brushes its fingertips across my home on this Thanksgiving 2025, I am taken back to the Thanksgivings of another place and another time, which always seemed cold, and sometimes there was snow on the ground.
At one point in Southwestern Pennsylvania, it began snowing during Halloween week and didn’t stop until the week after Easter. There were some years in my childhood that featured both trick or treating and easter egg hunts in a winter coat and gloves.
On many Thanksgivings were would arrive at around noon at my grandmother’s house. After watching Santa arrive at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the big wooden console family TV would be turned off, and we would hear, “Ok, time to go,” which was the universal signal for all of us piling into the car, whichever used car my father had managed to come across in one of his deals that would run for a few months than inevitabily demostrate why he got it for $200, and head to Thanksgiving dinner.
My grandmother’s house was small and heated by two gas-powered stoves. We didn’t live far away. My aunt, uncle, and two cousins would usually already be there, so the TV would be on in the living room where my dad would settle in with my uncle, the smell of turkey was everywhere, and I would take a seat in the kitchen where I would talk non-stop to everyone.
There was a sense of something in that house of cold Thanksgivings, when in many years things were hard for blue-collar families like ours during the Reagan years, which Republicans then, like Trump today, consider a golden age, but really weren’t if you were working class.
A sense of community, perseverance, determination, and strength were also in the air during those holidays.
In the 1980s, as in 2025, the country had White House leadership that constantly sent the message that they didn’t care about you if you were a woman, black, blue collar, gay, poor, or basically anyone who wasn’t a white male. The Reagan years weren’t for you.
The Reagan administration’s policies made life harder. Jobs were lost, and communities were forever changed for the worse. The sort of hardscrabble towns where the middle class was possible vanished into decades-long decline, and some still have not recovered to this day.
I feel the same sense of strength and determination in America today. The difference between the 1980s and 2025 is that those who are telling us that things are wonderful are being rejected.
I strongly sense that America has decided to quarantine itself off from Donald Trump. Increasingly, most of the country is treating him like a lame duck who is being shuttled off to the corner as most of the nation counts down the days until he is gone.
Donald Trump thought that he could come back to the presidency and be a dictator.
Trump tried. The media capitulated. Institutions bent the knee to Trump. Even Republicans in Congress surrendered their power as a coequal branch of government.
With all of this going for him, Donald Trump failed to become a dictator and break democracy.
The one opponent who has refused to bend the knee is the American people.
The American people as a collective are stronger than any one president. That is one of the foundational principles of this nation.
Trump will continue to try to do things that no president should, but the American people will be there to tell him no.
In less than a year, there will be a midterm election, and Trump is likely to lose badly and formally become a lame duck.
If we are fortunate enough to meet again next Thanksgiving, there will be much to discuss.

This Thanksgiving, be thankful that many underestimated the American people who have risen up to turn Donald Trump into the dictator who never was.
Happy Thanksgiving.

You should have added “…and smarter than Trump”. He fooled many for awhile but then they “woke up”
Let us hope this is true. Money still holds sway and the entrenchment of life long politicians.
