Arrests of Joseph and Kendra Duggar Reveal an Ugly Truth about New Right Family Values

The Duggar family’s many arrests for harm to children evince the reality of a regressive, highly controlled, domineering, patriarchal culture for all to see. The fundamentalist Christian lifestyle’s vision for women is sold as happy trad wives, but in reality it’s often much darker.

So it is not a surprise to see two more Duggars arrested.
This is a family pushed by the Right as the perfect family. Josh even worked as a lobbyist for the conservative Family Research Council, which promotes conservative "family values”, before his conviction for possession of child sexual assault material.
The Duggar family are famous from TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, and were branded as the “perfect” Christian family by presenting a pristine, wholesome image of a large, orderly, conservative Christian household in which women and children are subordinate to the husband and father.
They were faces of the Quiverfull movement, viewing children as a blessing and refusing birth control. This image, heavily promoted by the (abusive) Institute in Basic Life Principles, emphasized modest dress, homeschooling, and rigid courting rules.
ARRESTS
But in reality, Joseph Duggar was just arrested in Tontitown, Arkansas on March 18, 2026 for lewd and lascivious behavior involving a 9-year-old girl during a family vacation in Florida.
His wife Kendra Duggar was arrested separately on March 20, 2026 in Arkansas for minor endangerment and false imprisonment.
Add on to this idea of the perfect conservative Christian family that on March 20, Joseph Duggar faced eight additional charges in Arkansas, including four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.
This follows the arrest of the Duggar family’s eldest son, Josh, who was arrested in April 2021 on federal charges of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material. He was found guilty in December 2021 and sentenced in May 2022 to 12 years and seven months in federal prison. He is currently serving his sentence at FCI Seagoville in Texas.
Josh’s arrest for child sexual assault material followed accusations made in 2015 that he molested several of his sisters as a teenager. Later that year, he admitted to infidelity, resulting in the cancellation of 19 Kids and Counting.
After the cancellation, the Right rebranded its efforts to sell this same highly controlled by the patriarch vision. It’s currently being marketed very successfully to young women as the trad wife life.
But the Duggar family was deeply entrenched in Republican politics and advocating for conservative Christian values. Patriarch Jim Bob Duggar served as a Republican Arkansas state representative from 1999-2003, and he frequently ran for higher office. Michelle Duggar campaigned against a 2014 Fayetteville anti-discrimination ordinance, recording robocalls against LGBTQ+ rights. The family also campaigned for Republican politicians like Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, and Josh Duggar previously worked for the conservative Family Research Council. Yes, those people. The people preaching against pornography.
