Judge Aileen Cannon Delays Trump’s Classified Documents Trial
As Stormy Daniels was testifying, Judge Aileen Cannon issued an order in Florida indefinitely delaying Donald Trump’s classified documents trial.
CNN reported the reason for the delay that Cannon gave:
The judge’s new schedule lays out all the legal disputes that Cannon must decide before a jury could hear the case. Cannon said that the process will take at least until late July of this year.
Cannon noted in her Tuesday order that there are eight substantive pending motions she has yet to decide. She also reiterated that she believes the national security mishandling allegations in the case “present novel and difficult questions.”
CNN reported on some of the difficult questions that Cannon is facing:
Cannon said in her new scheduling order that she will hold a hearing on what had been considered Trump’s longshot request for records from the Biden administration.
…
Cannon also scheduled a June 21 hearing on Trump’s claims that Smith was unlawfully appointed.
Trump’s favorite judge came through for him in a big way. However, it is doubtful that Trump will ever have a trial date set before the 2024 presidential election in the classified documents case.
The Georgia RICO case was always expected to be long and complex, so Trump probably won’t see the inside of as courtroom in Atlanta before 2025.
The best hope the American people have for potential Trump accountability is the 1/6 related case that could start before election day if the Supreme Court rules somewhat quickly rules on Trump’s immunity claim.
We’ll talk more about what Special Counsel Jack Smith can do and what should happen to Judge Cannon below.
