The partisan lens that seems to shape almost all political discourse in the United States is capable of such distortions that it makes the completely implausible and unacceptable into a contested issue.
The nomination of Pete Hegseth to be the Secretary of Defense is a perfect example of the funhouse mirror knee-jerk partisanship that defines the Republican Party. Less than 15 years ago, if a nominee like Pete Hegseth came before the Senate, they would be immediately rejected. The drunkness, sexual assault, possible rape, and domestic violence allegations would have overwhelmingly got his nomination canned. In fact, Hegseth would have never made it out of the vetting for any other president-elect.
