The Suspect Was A Spree Shooting Perfect Storm
The person of interest in the spree shootings is a 20-year military firearms instructor who was reportedly having mental health issues and was evaluated in a facility earlier this year. Robert Card was reportedly hearing voices, but since Maine has gun laws that are the equivalent of Texas, he was able to keep all of his guns and carry out the attack at multiple locations.
Republicans will want to focus on the mental illness part of the story and stop the conversation there, but millions of Americans have a mental illness and they don’t become mass or spree killers. Blaming mental illness is an insult to those who live with their medical issue and don’t harm others or themselves.
Conservatives never want to blame the guns, because the weapons industry donates a lot of money to Republican candidates, and in return, they want loose gun laws because the easy availability of guns is good for business.
Republicans also immediately claim anytime that gun laws are brought up that Democrats are trying to take away all guns. Republicans frame the gun debate as either everyone can easily get a gun or nobody can get a gun.
The reality is that one specific gun is a lot of the problem, and we will talk about it below.
