A Unique Presidential Election Is What Voters Want
One of the reasons why voters were so unenthused about a rematch of the 2020 presidential election was that modern American history has the very human element of holding unique presidential elections.
An examination of the elections since 1992 reveals that each election was a product of its moment. Bill Clinton turned the page on the Reagan era with a younger more vibrant message. Looking at it today, the 2000 election was the first marker of the sort of partisanship and divide that the nation finds itself in today. 2004 was an election with a nation at war and still reeling from 9/11.
2008 was the combination of a generational political figure in Barack Obama meeting the historic challenge of the Great Recession. 2016 was a dark cloud of an election that signaled a turn after eight years of Obama, and 2020 was a once in century pandemic and the perfect candidate to get the nation back on its feet in Joe Biden.
2024 was made unique by Trump’s third run at the White House and Biden’s late decision to step aside. Until Biden stepped aside, 2024 had taken on the foreboding tone of 2016. Some of that was the lingering scars from the pandemic, and some of it came from the fact that both party’s nominees did not look like or represent the future.
Trump’s strategy and what he spent millions upon millions of dollars planning on doing was to defy the modern history of presidential elections by turning 2024 into a replay of 2016.
Donald Trump needed a low turnout election where voters are not excited and most importantly a contest where he could hide his own flaws as a candidate by making the election all about his opponent. Trump did this in 2016 to Hillary Clinton. He was on his way to doing it to Joe Biden in 2024, but then Kamala Harris came along a ruined his strategy.
