House Republicans Were A Historic Failure
As we bring 2023 to a close, one thing that is worth examining is what members of Congress have done. House Republicans have been a complete mess. They first couldn’t elect a Speaker of the House. Ten months later, they fired the speaker that they elected. Republicans ran through a slew of candidates who also could not be elected speaker and finally settled on Rep, Mike Johnson.
House Republicans also expelled a member, launched an evidence-free impeachment investigation, and set a record for being one of the least productive Congresses in US history in terms of passing bills that became law.
Dysfunction and chaos seem like a weight that would be too heavy for Democrats to overcome in the House, but the Democrats remained very effective, and they did so in part because they were better organized and more experienced at oversight and governing.
As House Republicans flailed from crisis to crisis, while trying to appease Trump, Democrats had a plan, and it was executed very effectively.
House Oversight Democrats Assembled A Truth Squad
One of the first things that House Democrats on the powerful Oversight Committee did was under the leadership of Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), they assembled what they labeled a Truth Squad. The goal of the Truth Squald was to push back against Republican lies, distortions, and misrepresentations.
The coordinated effort has been effective in countering the floundering Biden impeachment investigation.
This is a partial list of what House Oversight Democrats accomplished in 2023:
Throughout the first session of the 118th Congress, Committee Democrats released numerous reports, fact sheets, and memos dispelling Republican misrepresentations and distortions of the facts in transcribed interviews with key witnesses in the bogus investigation into President Biden.
In July 2023, Ranking Member Jamie Raskin and Committee on Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson debunked Congressional Republicans’ blatant lies about the conditions at the southern border in support of their baseless efforts to impeach Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
In September 2023, Ranking Member Jamie Raskin highlighted the flops, failures, and fantasies in Chairman James Comer’s sham investigation into President Biden.
In December 2023, Oversight Committee Democrats pushed back on claims made by Republicans in their sham impeachment investigation, circulating a memo showing Republicans’ lack of evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden.
