Earlier this week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the war over. Iran didn’t get the memo.

Trump is reportedly “bored” with the Iran war and wants to move on. There is just one big detail standing in his way.

When one country starts a war with another, the war doesn’t end until one country surrenders or the sides negotiate a peace treaty.

Trump’s problem is that he started a war that Iran is in no hurry to end, because the extremists in Iran have strengthened their hold on power in the country, the Strait of Hormuz, and the region.

In other words, Iran is winning.

Trump is losing, and he wants out, but Iran isn’t letting him go.

The Atlantic reported:

At least for now, the man who wrote The Art of the Deal can’t even get Iran to the negotiating table. Today, Washington is still waiting for Iran to respond to the latest offering, a one-page memorandum of understanding that is far more of an extension of the cease-fire than a treaty to end the conflict.

The administration keeps telling the American people that any day now, Iran will respond to their proposal and the war will end.

Iran is willing to drag this out because it was reported that Iran wants to humiliate Trump.

The US and Iran have traded fire over Hormuz, but not to worry, the non-deal “ceasefire” is still on, according to President Trump.

The Memorandum of Understanding reported on the 6th — i.e., Trump’s “deal” — is in actuality a preliminary "one-page" Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) intended to immediately end active conflict and establish a framework for long-term negotiation.

So, not even a deal yet.

It’s an agreement authored by two men who are seen as anything but renowned statesmen, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, to end the conflict that Trump and Netanyahu started together. Yay?

Like all of Trump’s “deals”, this one lasted but hours before it went to Hell. But of course, Trump stated late Thursday that the truce remains intact despite recent U.S. strikes on military targets following Iranian attacks on destroyers.

The truce is “intact” even though we are still warring. That’s the TACO Doctrine, meaningless fluff followed by heaping praise on the man who doesn’t seem to know where he is when he’s not falling asleep in front of the cameras when posing for photos — aka, the few hours of “work” he puts in every week, unless crypto deals to enrich himself and his family to the reported tune of $1 billion are considered part of his job as president.

Donald Trump has not only made America worse again, he has made the entire globe unsafe with his petty jealousy of Barack Obama and his clownish, puffed up buffoonery on a world stage he understands at an inverse proportion the size of his own ego.

To wit, Trump’s 2018 withdrawal from the JCPOA led to Iran enriching over 400 kg of highly enriched uranium, increasing nuclear risk.

Following the 2018 U.S. withdrawal from Obama’s JCPOA, Iran significantly increased its nuclear activities, resulting in a stockpile of over 400 kg of 60% enriched uranium as of mid-2025.

We Were All Safer with Obama’s Deal

Had Trump had maintained former Obama’s hard fought Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the world would be safer with less enriched uranium by Iran.

Jack Straw was involved in the JCPOA talks and managed the UK’s response to the Iraq war in his capacity as Foreign Secretary from 2001 to 2006. He posited on France 24 that if Trump had maintained Obama’s JCPOA, the world would be safer.

It is not breaking news that Democrats are angry. There are also many Democrats who do not trust the party leadership after the debacle that was the 2024 election.

Democratic supporters are enraged, and nothing will satisfy them besides winning the midterm election. Many Democrats want to win up and down the ballot and do everything they can to put Trump into lame duck status.

Candidates who are tapping into that anger are faring well so far in 2026.

The fact that the candidates who are doing well are often more progressive is making D.C. Democrats nervous.

Many Democrats are blaming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for the flame out of his chosen candidate, Gov. Janet Mills in Maine, but the issue is much bigger than Schumer.

Axios reported:

“If you spend any time on the ground in Iowa, in Michigan, in Minnesota ... you will be absolutely floored with the intensity and the anger of Democratic primary voters,” Bill Neidhardt, a Democratic strategist working to elect some of the anti-establishment Senate contenders, told us.

Their fury is “not comprehended in the least by a lot of folks in D.C.,” he said.

“Our focus is on winning a Democratic Senate majority in November,” said DSCC spokesperson Maeve Coyle. “We created a path to do that this cycle by recruiting formidable candidates, expanding the map and disqualifying Republican opponents — and we are confident those strategies will lead us to victory.”

The disconnect between D.C. Democrats and Democrats on the ground is not new. It was one of the issues that plagued Democrats in 2022 and 2024.

More and more Americans are getting buried under the weight of escalating costs and inflation. Prices were high before Trump's Iran war, but the administration made the situation even worse by causing gas prices to skyrocket.

The Trump administration’s response has not been what any sane leadership would do. Instead of dealing with the economic crisis by ending the war in the Middle East, the White House has decided to pretend like everything is fine and hope that people don’t notice the rising gas prices.

Here was Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy’s response when asked about gas prices:

 We live in a very different world, and I just don't think we've had other presidents who've been willing to see the threat and address the threat of Iran. And I think you're gonna see prices come down immediately. You saw yesterday energy prices came down below $100 a barrel. Yeah. I think we're at $93 this morning.

Don't quote me on that, but I was looking at it. I think it was like $92, $93 for Brent crude. So we're in a good place. We see the price of crude going down significantly recently, but when could we see that at the pump? Especially now we're getting into that summer blend gasoline.

But it's interesting the way gas stations work. When prices go up per barrel, that the next day, the price at the pump goes up. And as prices go down, it takes a little bit longer to ricochet through lower prices at the pump. That's the way they operate. But again, we have a lag time of probably a week to 10 days when you see a price per barrel go down to see prices reflected in the pumps across the country.

By the time Duffy was done talking, oil prices had gone back up again, so his notion that gas prices were going to fall was already disproven.

After Axios reported on the basics of a memorandum of understanding that is being negotiated by the Trump administration and Iran:

Among other provisions, the deal would involve Iran committing to a moratorium on nuclear enrichment, the U.S. agreeing to lift its sanctions and release billions in frozen Iranian funds, and both sides lifting restrictions around transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Many of the terms laid out in the memo would be contingent on a final agreement being reached, leaving the possibility of renewed war or an extended limbo in which the hot war has stopped but nothing is truly resolved.

Apparently, what Trump meant by peace through strength was not what his supporters thought it meant. Trump’s definition seems to be starting a war, then quitting on it, and giving the opponent everything they wanted when the war gets difficult.

The framework that might be agreed upon will lead the United States to reimplement the Obama Iran nuclear deal, with Iran being much stronger and the US being weaker than when Obama was in office.

Some of Trump’s allies seem very unhappy with what could be the deal.

It is a fool’s errand to project special elections onto the national political landscape. Special elections tend to be their own entities that are influenced heavily by local issues, candidate quality, and voter turnout.

In layperson terms, weird things can happen in special elections, but when a special election has statewide consequences, as it did in a special state senate election in Michigan on Tuesday, the perception shifts.

In Michigan, control of the state Senate was on the ballot. A Republican win would have taken away the Democratic majority and forced the body into a 19-19 tie.

The Republican Party was looking at the race as a potential indicator of how the party might fare in higher statewide races in November, and what they got was some very bad news.

As NBC News put it:

Democrat Chedrick Greene has won a special state Senate election in Michigan, NBC News projects, ensuring his party will keep control of the closely divided chamber.

Greene, a Marine veteran and firefighter, defeated Republican Jason Tunney, a former prosecutor, in the special election to replace Democratic U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, who resigned from the state Senate after she was elected to Congress in 2024.

It wasn’t just a loss. Greene won by 19.5 points, which suggests that dark days could be coming for Republicans in Michigan.

The Trump administration decided to voluntarily cause gas prices to rise by starting a war with Iran. This is not a situation where the US was caught in the fallout from world events, like when gas prices briefly spiked in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Trump decided to start a war, and the American people are paying the price at the pump. Given that they started a war of choice, the Trump administration should have some idea or direction for how this war is going to end.

If the administration doesn’t have a plan, it should at minimum be clear with the American people when it comes to gas prices.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with reporters to talk about the war in Iran. Instead, he was peppered with questions about the impact of the war at home. Specifically, Rubio was asked about gas prices.

The Secretary of State was asked, “ The average price of gas in the country right now is- Yeah ...$4.50. Do you have a thought on how long Americans are supposed to kind of accept this? Do you think it will affect Republicans' majorities in the midterms?”

Rubio is no dummy, but he also wants to be president more than anything else in the world, which is why he shut off his brain and answered:

It is not a secret to anyone who is willing to use their eyes and ears that Donald Trump is in decline. A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that nearly 60% of Americans believe that Donald Trump doesn’t have the mental sharpness required to be president. 55% of respondents expressed the belief that Trump isn’t physically able to perform the duties of the presidency.

This would seem to be a big problem.

Trump set out to put the issue to rest by complaining about how difficult his dementia screenings are.

Trump went off on one of his favorite self-incriminating rants, which is how being screened for dementia proves that he is really smart.

The president said:

 One of the things I said is that we should have, in my opinion, anybody running for president or vice president should take a cognitive test. And no president has ever taken one except me. I've taken three of them and I've aced each one.

One in the first administration, two over here. And whenever they get a little sassy "Does he still have it? Does he still have what it takes?" I say, "All right, I'll take another one."

And they are hard. There are many people in this room I know that are smart. They're not gonna ace it. There are many people standing back there, the fake news made it there. I'd like to have them ... the first question, it's very easy, and they always show the first question is, you have a lion, a bear, an alligator, and a, what's another good, a squirrel, okay? Which is the squirrel?

In case you missed it, Trump admitted that he has been screened for dementia three more times than any other president in history.

To make matters even worse, two of those screenings have come within the last year plus that he has been back in office, which suggests that somebody somewhere has some serious concerns that Trump’s mind is slipping.

Since Donald Trump never knows when he should be quiet, the president kept talking.

If you have ever said a critical word about Donald Trump on the internet, it doesn’t take long before someone replies, accusing the critic of having Trump Derangement Syndrome or TDS.

Trump Derangement Syndrome doesn’t exist. It’s not a real thing, but that hasn’t stopped the president and his administration from using it to brush off criticism.

There does seem to be a problem in the United States with a derangement syndrome, but it is not people who are deranged over Donald Trump.

It is the Donald Trump administration’s derangement over Joe Biden.

For example, after Spirit Airlines went out of business because the Trump administration couldn’t or wouldn’t find a way to save 17,000 jobs, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, “I think it's important to talk about why we are here today? There was a proposed merger between JetBlue and Spirit, and Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, along with the Biden DOJ decided that they did not want that merger to take place.”

It didn’t matter to Duffy that the CEO of Spirit Airlines said that Trump’s Iran war was the final straw that put the airline under. To the Trump administration, the demise of Spirit was all the fault of a man who left office almost a year and a half ago.

This was not an isolated incident. The Trump administration was blaming Biden for more of its failures on Monday.

Trump’s acting AG Todd Blanche desperately wants to be the next attorney general. Blanche is doing everything that he can to impress Trump, and the one thing that Donald Trump wants more than anything else is for the Department of Justice to prosecute his political enemies, who really aren’t enemies, but are people who either have criticized Trump or tried to hold him accountable.

Blanche has been digging quite a hole for himself in the last month, but he took it to a new low with the latest indictment of James Comey.

The acting AG went on Meet The Press where he was asked, “It is worth noting that on Amazon.com, we looked this up, there are dozens of products with the same terminology, we're showing it right here, “86 47” being sold and purchased right now. Should individuals selling or buying "86 47" merchandise be concerned that they're going to be prosecuted by the DOJ?”

It was a good question because, according to Blanche, posting 86 47 is a threat to the president’s life, and threatening the life of the president is a crime.

Blanche’s answer to the question was to unravel the narrative of Comey’s indictment, and according to Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), Todd Blanche is heading for disbarment.

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) discussed the need to de-Trumpify the government on MS NOW’s The Weekend.

Raskin said:

We need a sweeping de-Trumpification of the Department of Justice.

There are huge parts of the DOJ that have just been dismantled. For example, when they started off, they said they’re no longer going to enforce the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. They stopped monitoring the foreign subversion of American elections.

In other words, they want to facilitate all of that.

The pardon office was dismantled so it could become a totally political operation run out of the White House and Donald Trump’s brain and you know the political operatives.

So we need to re-establish the basic functions of the office and then we need to, we have to go after all of the corruption that pervades the Department of Justice and the rest of the government.

The destruction of the Department of Justice gets a lot of attention, but what is happening at the Pentagon is a massive problem.

The Washington Post reported:

The defense secretary is now more confident than ever in his job security, people familiar with the matter said, and appears to be inoculated against his early missteps thanks to his unflinching loyalty to and close personal relationship with Trump, his willingness to carry out presidential directives with few questions asked and his pugnacious reshaping of the military to root out “woke” people and policies.

…

Hegseth’s standing has risen even as the president in recent weeks removed three Cabinet members — Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer — who came to be seen as political liabilities. Some officials cautioned that dynamics can change quickly in the Trump administration, and it’s hard to know how long anyone is safe.

One administration official equated the state of play to that of a grizzly bear chasing a group of hikers, saying, “As long as you don’t run the slowest, you’re safe — and Pete is not the slowest right now.”

Trump could sour on Hegseth tomorrow, but Hegseth’s destruction of the Department of Defense is a national security and economic issue.

Republicans rejoiced after the Supreme Court majority weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and started plotting to eliminate majority minority Democratic districts in the South.

Even though early projections by election experts suggest that Republicans will be able to net 2-8 House seats, not the dozens that some on the right are dreaming of, the GOP is moving full steam ahead with a plan that is very likely to weaken current red districts while trying to gain House seats.

The problem that Republicans are ignoring is that ending majority minority districts weakens surrounding Republican districts because those Democratic voters who get moved will continue to vote for Democratic candidates.

Democrats have been emboldened by their redistricting victories in 2026, and they are vowing to undertake a massive redistricting effort in blue states if Republicans in the South eliminate majority minority districts.

Trump took this bogus idea to a different level when he was asked by reporters about the 60 day mark and the legal requirement that he seek congressional authorization for the Iran war.

The president said:

 No other country has ever, done it. It's never been in, as you know, most people consider it totally unconstitutional.

Also, we had a ceasefire, so that gives you additional time. But no other country's done it.

We're in the midst of a big victory. This is a victory like we haven't had since Venezuela, okay? To be honest with you, we haven't had ... But, you know, we have a country that lost its way. It really lost its way. That's our country in terms of the military. Now we have a great military. We're on our way to another victory, a big victory, and I don't think that it's constitutional what they're asking for.

These are not patriotic people that are asking. You know, when they say even, even the losers, even the ones that say all the wrong things admit that it's been amazing what we've done. The Strait is totally shut down. It's flawless. It's totally 100% shut down.

Trump is bragging about shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, which is an act of war, so there is definitely a war still going on.

Countries, including the United States, require the legislative branch to authorize war. FDR went to Congress and requested a war authorization after Pearl Harbor.

Trump’s fantasy soon met reality, but not before he tried to manipulate the stock market.

Democrats need to connect Trump’s broken mind to the bad economy.

Sen. Chris Murphy spoke on the Senate floor and demonstrated exactly how to do it.

Murphy said:

Let’s just put this in real terms. If you’re a commuter in this country who has a longer than average commute, you are probably buying somewhere short of 1000 gallons a year in auto fuel. And so when the price jumps by $1, and it may soon jump by $2, that’s 1000 to $2,000 out of your pocket. Okay, 30 to 40% of American families are living paycheck to paycheck. 40% of American families have less than $400 in the bank in liquid assets ready to spend on an emergency like a car repair or an emergency medical bill. And so when you are spending $1,000 more every year just to fill up your tank. You go from being on the brink of financial crisis, into financial crisis. And again this isn’t bad luck. This isn’t a natural disaster. Donald Trump chose to increase gas prices in this country to $4.30 a gallon.

Senator Murphy was 100% correct. This was all done by choice. Trump could have chosen not to start a war with Iran. Trump could have chosen not to impose tariffs. Trump could have chosen to do something about rising prices, but he’s done nothing.

Murphy called Trump’s decision insane and showed how it is rippling through the economy.

The White House and Republicans in Congress have been trying to blame Democrats for the Department of Homeland Security shutdown that the GOP caused by refusing to negotiate with Democrats to reform ICE and border patrol.

After the murders of Renee Goode and Alex Pretti, Democrats in the House and Senate took a principled stand and said that they would not vote for ICE and border patrol funding unless reforms were put into place.

What unfolded was the longest government shutdown in the nation’s history. DHS has been shut down for 76 days, and Democrats didn’t budge.

Politico reported:

The Senate passed the partial DHS funding measure in March, but for more than a month, House GOP leaders have bowed to the holdouts and resisted calls to send it to President Donald Trump’s desk. Now the White House and some House Republican lawmakers are pressuring Johnson to clear the bill before lawmakers leave town for a weeklong recess.

House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole of Oklahoma and House Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain of Michigan were among the Republican lawmakers who confirmed that GOP leaders are attempting to send the bill on for Trump’s signature Thursday.

In the end, the DHS shutdown ended with a whimper. House Republicans passed the Senate bill that does not include funding for ICE and border patrol by voice vote.

If there was good news in the Supreme Court majority’s expected gutting of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, it is that it wasn’t found to be unconstitutional. The other piece of good news is that, according to experts, the ruling has come too late to fully impact the upcoming midterm election.

Otherwise, this is a dark moment for voting rights in the United States as the Supreme Court will allow minority voters to have their voices in our democracy diluted.

The good news is that Supreme Court rulings aren’t commandments written in stone. The ruling can be overcome through legislation.

Former President Barack Obama showed the American people the path forward in a statement.

Obama said:

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.

The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

A visit that began inauspiciously with Republican Representative Lauren Boebert mistakenly referred to King Charles III as "King George" in an April 2026 interview had a stirring moment as the King gave a speech in front of the U.S. Congress in which he zealously advocated for the U.S.’s checks and balances on the executive branch (I.e., the president) to a standing ovation.

Charles knows what he did because here’s his face right after the checks and balances quote:

King Charles III said in part:

“The founding fathers were bold and imaginative rebels with a cause. Two hundred and fifty years ago, or as we say in the United Kingdom, “just the other day,” they declared independence. By balancing contending forces and drawing strength in diversity, they united 13 disparate colonies to forge a nation on the revolutionary idea of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

They carried with them and carried forward the great inheritance of the British Enlightenment, as well as the ideals which had an even deeper history in English common law and Magna Carta. These roots run deep, and they are still vital.

Our Declaration of Rights of 1689 was not only the foundation of our constitutional monarchy, but also provided a source of so many of the principles reiterated, often verbatim, in the American Bill of Rights of 1791.

And those roots go even further back in history. The U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society has calculated that Magna Carta is cited in at least 160 Supreme Court cases since 1789, not least as the foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances.”

Blanche held a press conference where he claimed, “There are multiple threats cases very similar to this one, including one where the defendant pled guilty recently to threatening former President Biden, another one that's scheduled to go to trial this summer. Another one indicted, an individual was divided, was indicted for threatening Tom Holman. Today, the King is set to address a joint meeting of Congress at 3 PM ET at Capitol Hill and is reportedly a “centerpiece” of the King’s four-day state visit to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Why the King is here to celebrate this country’s rejection of a King is anyone’s guess, but it does seem appropriate given Trump’s desires to be a King himself. Perhaps this is the celebration of the return to Kings in Trump’s mind. No one can be sure.

But this trip has been mired in awkwardness from the outset, with outlets demanding to know if Charles will even bother visiting his son and grandchildren, who live in California. The answer is no, and has something to do with the fact that Prince Harry is suing the Daily Mail publisher for alleged unlawful news gathering.

One cannot imagine his mother, Queen Elizabeth, having ever been so foolish as to make it crystal clear that the Royal family is not a family, but an institution run like the most cut-throat big business corporate firm imaginable. She saw the “family” part of the brand was seen as critical to protecting the institution.

But apparently that’s not how Charles sees it.

Soft Power in the Age of Trump

Charles is said to have a diplomatic touch and British journalists seem to have high hopes for this visit in terms of real results like Trump taking back his take backs of a tech deal, which as an American is rather heartbreaking to watch.

As long as Donald Trump has been in business on this planet, he has never been a decent person. No amount of soft power charm is going to change that.

If King Charles can bring some blackmail or tough guy power, that’s a different story. That’s Trump’s wheelhouse. He understands that kind of “negotiation.”
